She held a joint postdoc at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center with Prof. Anna-Katerina Hadjantonakis and the Wellcome-MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute with Prof. Jenny Nichols, developing organoid systems to investigate cell differentiation and tissue organization. In the Leucht lab, she is exploring how aging affects skeletal progenitor cells, funded by a New York Stem Cell Foundation Druckenmiller Fellowship. He went on to complete a PhD in Genetics and Development Columbia University studying kidney development, where a particular interest in cell fate specification solidified. He now investigates the influence of the positional memory of skeletal stem cells on bone regeneration. During her thesis in the laboratory of Pr. Lucien Bettendorff, she studied the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect of dibenzoylthiamine, a synthetic precursor of vitamin B1. She joined the laboratory in May 2022 after a post-doc at Mount Sinai in Neurosciences. Margaux studies the signaling pathways responsible for aging and which can serve as a target for better bone healing. There, Matt developed a strong interest in regenerative medicine while working with liver organoids derived from human pluripotent stem cells. He also worked on developing synthetic signaling pathways between cells to program differentiation. My name is Raven, and I am an undergraduate student majoring in Biological Sciences on an MD-PhD track at CUNY Hunter College. My experiences at the Leucht Lab opened doors to new wet lab techniques, including dissection, quantitative image analysis, cell culturing skills, and more. It also exposed me to how the edges of science are expanded in the laboratory and how this work may be translated into big impacts on our everyday lives. I was surrounded by a supportive, fun, and intelligent group of students and experts alike that offered me guidance and reassurance in my stepping into a brand new field. This summer not only showed me how much fun research can be but also allowed me to develop many interpersonal and professional skills. I joined CDM as a high schooler in NYC and later became a summer intern at the Leucht Lab, where I contributed to studying the effects of aging on the functional capabilities of skeletal stem and progenitor cells. During my time as an intern, I not only gained exposure to countless wet lab techniques while working on a meaningful project, but I also received direct mentoring and guidance.
